6 things to look forward to in the first trimester

Writer: Alexis MeisenholderAlexis Meisenholder

The first trimester of pregnancy can be really hard. It brings morning sickness, exhaustion, and sore boobs. Your body is going through a lot of changes in a short period of time. But there are also moments to look forward to that you'll remember for a lifetime! Of course since I have yet to be pregnant, I asked some friends what they liked about their first trimester pregnant. I hope their answers can shed some light on what can be a hard time!

1. Your clothes still fit (for the most part)

Especially at the beginning of the first trimester, your uterus is still pretty small because your baby is still small. That means that, unless you don't want to, you can wear the clothes you already have! If your jeans don't fit and you don't want to go out and buy new ones yet, you can always try the hair tie trick (loop a hairtie through the button hole, and then around the button) to accommodate any growth. Your breasts may already have grown some, so maternity/ nursing bras might be your friend from early on. Most people find that dresses and shirts are able to be used through the first trimester! However, if they don't fit, at least you'll get good use out of your maternity clothes!

2. You get to decide when (or if) to tell people

People get nosy around pregnant women. I don't know what it is, but if they see a belly they feel the need to ask about it. The good thing is that in the first trimester, most of the time the fact that you're pregnant gets to be your fun little secret. If you want to tell your best friend as soon as you pee on the stick, but wait until you're further along to tell your boss, you can and no growing belly will give you away.

3. Your hair usually grows quickly and is healthy

This one depends on the person, but a lot of people are blessed with thick hair that grows quickly. Maybe it's the prenatal vitamins frequently taken or the crazy hormones that are trying to make everything grow, but either way I say take the good where you can!

4. You can lean into the "treat me like a queen, I'm growing life" idea

Most people are more than happy to support you through difficult moments when they find out you're pregnant. Cravings come and they can hit hard, so now you have a perfect reason as to why you NEED Chick-Fil-A now. Pregnancy is hard on your body, so when you can, try to enjoy self care. A warm bath (not too hot) can help achey muscles and ease morning sickness. Naps are encouraged. Chocolate is also encouraged.

5. Blood results can tell you sex at 8 weeks

If you're really eager to find out the sex of your baby, there are at home blood tests you can do that will give you a pretty accurate guess of if you're having a boy or girl! If you're one that likes to plan ahead, this is a fun thing to look into. Of course there are those who get inaccurate results, but for the most part they're right!

6. You might be able to hear your baby's heartbeat

I saved this one for last because it's potentially the most exciting. Hearing your baby's heartbeat for the first time is a magical moment. For some people, hearing the heartbeat is when reality sets in. The heartbeat can sometimes be heard at 6 weeks on an ultrasound. It's not uncommon to not be able to hear it then, so most providers don't do ultrasounds until a bit later in gestation, but usually still within the first trimester.
